Parts overview

1. Bean hopper Pour in coffee beans. The built-in conical burr grinder grinds them fresh for each drink.
2. Grind size ring The ring at the bottom of the hopper, with 8 settings. Lower numbers are finer. If the flow is fast, grind finer. If it's slow, grind coarser.
3. Dose knob Controls how much coffee is ground each time. For the first use, start at the lowest setting and slowly increase.
4. Mode knob Four modes: Espresso, Long Black, Cold Brew, and Hot Water.
5. Portafilter The portafilter that holds the filter basket, with single and double baskets and a dosing funnel.
6. Tamper Handheld tamper. After grinding, set the portafilter on the tamping mat and press straight down to compact the coffee evenly.
7. Brew head The portafilter goes here. Turn right as far as it goes to lock it, then brew.
8. Steam wand For frothing milk. Wipe it after use and release a little steam to clean it.
9. Water tank On the back of the machine. Remove it entirely to fill. Has a built-in water filter.
10. Drip tray Catches excess water. When the red float rises, it's time to empty it.
11. Power switch On the left side of the machine, toward the back, not on the panel. Turns the power on and off.

First-time setup

1. Unpack and wash the parts Remove all packaging. Wash the water tank, portafilter, filter basket, and milk pitcher in warm water and dry them.
2. Install the water filter and add water Soak the water filter for 1 minute, rinse it, and install it in the tank. Fill to just below the MAX line, then put the tank back on the rear of the machine.
3. Install the drip tray Push the drip tray and cup stand all the way in.
4. Pour in coffee beans Open the bean hopper lid, pour in fresh coffee beans, and close the lid.
5. Power on Plug it in and press the power switch on the left side of the machine. Flashing panel lights mean it's preheating. When they stay on, it's ready to use.
6. Rinse the lines Place a container under the brew head and hot water spout, and press OK to rinse the internal lines.
7. The first few cups are for dialing in When you first use the machine, it's normal for the first 4–5 cups not to taste ideal. Focus on adjusting the grind size and dose. The next section shows you how to make your first cup.

Make an espresso

1. Select "Espresso" Turn the mode knob to point at "Espresso".
2. Set the grind size Set the grind size ring at the bottom of the hopper to a middle setting (for example, 5), then fine-tune based on the flow.
3. Start at the lowest dose For the first use, turn the dose knob to the minimum, then increase little by little.
4. Attach the dosing funnel Clip the Dosing & Tamping Guide onto the portafilter. It keeps coffee from spilling during grinding and tamping.
5. Insert the portafilter at the grinder outlet Insert the portafilter into the holder below the grinder outlet.
6. Grind Gently push the portafilter in to start grinding. It stops automatically once it has ground enough, and the coffee falls directly into the filter basket.
7. Tamp Remove the portafilter and set it on the tamping mat. Keep the dosing funnel on for now. Press the tamper straight down to compact the coffee evenly.
8. Attach to the brew head and lock Remove the dosing funnel. Line up the portafilter with the brew head, push up, and turn right as far as it goes to lock.
9. Place the cup Place the cup on the cup stand directly below the brew head.
10. Start brewing Press OK to start brewing. Ideally, a small cup flows in 20 to 30 seconds and looks like honey. The pressure gauge needle should be in the Optimal Zone.

Froth milk for a latte

1. Drain the condensation first Point the steam wand at the drip tray, press the steam button to purge for a few seconds, then press again to turn off.
2. Pour in cold milk Pour cold milk from the fridge into the pitcher, about 1/3 full.
3. Insert the steam wand into the pitcher and froth Pull out the steam wand so the nozzle is just under the milk's surface, then press the steam button. A "hissing" sound means air is going in.
4. Clean the steam wand Press the steam button to stop the steam and move the pitcher away. Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth, then release a short burst of steam to clear milk from the nozzle.
5. Pour in the frothed milk Pour the frothed milk into the fresh espresso.

Clean and descale

1. Empty the drip tray The red float is up. Pull out the drip tray, empty it, rinse it, and put it back. We recommend emptying it daily.
2. Clean the filter basket After each use, remove the portafilter (turn left), knock out the coffee puck, and rinse the filter basket.
3. Descale light is on When the descale light turns on, there's scale inside the machine and it needs descaling. Use the dedicated descaler as the manual directs. Do not substitute vinegar.
4. Run the descale program Pour De'Longhi descaler and water into the tank, and turn the mode knob to Descale. When the descale light flashes, press OK. When finished, wash the tank, fill it with fresh water, and rinse the lines once more.
5. Set the water hardness In the settings menu, set the water hardness to match your home's water (test with the included strip). The harder the water, the more often you'll get descale alerts. A water filter reduces scale.

Flows too fast / tastes sour

1. Cause: under-extraction Fast flow with a weak or sour taste usually means the grind is too coarse or there's too little coffee, so water passes through the grounds too quickly.
2. Set the grind one step finer Turn the grind size ring one step toward the lower numbers, then make another cup to compare.
3. Still fast? Add a little more coffee If it's still fast after grinding finer, turn the dose knob up a little. Change only one thing at a time.

Flows too slowly / tastes bitter

1. Cause: over-extraction Dripping instead of flowing, with a bitter taste, usually means the grind is too fine or there's too much coffee, so water struggles to pass through the grounds.
2. Set the grind one step coarser Turn the grind size ring one step toward the higher numbers.
3. Still slow? Use a little less coffee If it's still slow after grinding coarser, turn the dose knob down a little.

No water comes out

1. Check the water tank First check that the water tank has water and is seated properly. Take it out, fill it, then push it firmly all the way in.
2. Rinse once With the water tank installed, place a container under the brew head and press OK to rinse once, clearing air from the lines.
3. Still not working? If it hasn't been descaled in a long time, scale can also slow the flow. See "Clean and descale". If the problem continues, contact support.

Milk won't froth

1. Check the milk first Use cold milk from the fridge, filling the pitcher no more than 1/3. Room-temperature milk or an overfilled pitcher is hard to froth.
2. Drain the condensation first Before frothing, press the steam button 3–4 times to purge all the condensation from the steam wand. Otherwise, the steam carries water and won't make foam.
3. Check the nozzle If there's little or no steam, the nozzle may be clogged with dried milk. Remove the nozzle, soak and wash it in warm water, and clear the small hole.
